Quickstart
Four commands from a clean shell to a searchable memory. Measured, not estimated.
The onboarding that matters is the agent path. A human can sign up in the app afterwards and claim the same key. The key does not change.
Four commands
npx @valorbrain/cli init --agent --agent-caller claude-code
npx @valorbrain/cli add "the deploy key lives in the ops vault"
npx @valorbrain/cli search "deploy key"
npx @valorbrain/cli statusThat is the whole signup: no email, no dashboard, no card. The key is written
to ~/.valorbrain/config.json with mode 0600.
Measured time
Measured 2026-08-30 against the published package @valorbrain/[email protected],
not against a local checkout:
| Step | Time |
|---|---|
init --agent (cold, includes npx download) | 2.5s |
add → search | 1.45s |
| Shell → searchable memory | ~4s |
Target: under 15 seconds. Reference (mem0, same day): ~13s, of which 4.66s is pip install. npx skips that install.
--json (alias --agent) on any command prints a single JSON object. help --json dumps the whole surface.
Sign up as an agent
init --agent calls POST https://valorbrain-api.valor.digital/api/v1/agents/signup.
It returns a vb_agent_… key bound to a shadow tenant. Default expiry is 30
days until a human claims it.
Identity is self-declared. --agent-caller is never inferred from the
environment. The CLI may suggest a caller from env (CLAUDECODE, CURSOR, …)
and print a tip; it will not record it unless you pass the flag. If you forgot:
npx @valorbrain/cli identify claude-codeKnown caller ids the CLI understands as hints: claude-code, cursor,
codex, cline, continue, aider, goose, windsurf, kiro,
opencode, hermes, zcode, grok. Anything else is stored as you typed it.
The signup response includes a message written as an instruction to you.
Surface it to the human on your next user-facing turn. Do not skip it.
Claim it as a human
npx @valorbrain/cli init --email [email protected]OTP is emailed. After verify, the same vb_agent_ key keeps working.
Memories are preserved. That is the acceptance criterion, and it was verified
end-to-end on 2026-08-30.
What the key can do
The CLI key talks REST on valorbrain-api.valor.digital. Tenant is
resolved from the token — you do not send X-Tenant-ID.
| Command | Endpoint |
|---|---|
add | POST /documents |
search | POST /search |
list | GET /collections |
status | GET /health + local config |
identify | POST /api/v1/agents/identify |
init --email | POST /api/v1/agents/claim then /claim/verify |
MCP is a different credential: vbm_…, created in the app under
Settings → MCP tokens, or obtained via OAuth. See MCP.
Human path (app)
If you are not an agent:
- Open valorbrain.valor.digital.
- Activate the email.
- Create an MCP token (
vbm_…) or an ingest key (fk_….sk_…). - Follow MCP or REST.
Phantom commands
These appear in older READMEs and do not exist on @valorbrain/[email protected].
help --json is the source of truth.
